Columbus Community Hospital Introduces Waterproof Casting for Patients

A groundbreaking new cast material is revolutionizing the way patients experience injuries and recovery. Unlike traditional cotton-based casts that can cause problems when exposed to water, this innovative material offers superior waterproof protection and durability.

Developed over the past decade, this advanced cast technology features a unique structure with thousands of tiny holes that absorb and channel water, allowing it to drain out of either end of the cast. This ensures that the cast remains dry and comfortable, even when exposed to water from showers, bathtubs or swimming pools.

"This new cast material is a game-changer for patients," says Dr. Steven Brown, an orthopedic surgeon at Columbus Orthopedic & Sports Medicine. "It offers unparalleled protection against water infiltration, providing patients with greater freedom and convenience during their recovery process."

The cast is currently not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in lakes, rivers or oceans because of the risk of bacterial infection. Therefore, providers at Columbus Community Hospital encourage parents to take precautions, such as using antibacterial soap to clean the cast thoroughly and avoiding submersion in natural bodies of water.

"We understand the importance of safety, and recommend that parents exercise caution when using this cast material in aquatic environments," added Dr. Brown. "By following simple guidelines, patients can enjoy the benefits of this innovative technology while minimizing the risk of infection."

In addition to its waterproof properties, this new cast material is also highly durable and can be used for full-body casts. However, it is not suitable for post-surgical casts because of the presence of incisions.

"We are excited to offer this advanced cast material to our patients at CCH," said Dr. Brown. "We believe it will significantly improve their recovery experience and provide them with a greater sense of independence."
