Columbus Community Hospital Honors Esteban Coria with Prestigious Sheaf of Wheat Award

Esteban Coria

Columbus Community Hospital is proud to announce that Esteban Coria, a valued member of the hospital’s medical interpretation team, has been honored with the prestigious Sheaf of Wheat Award.

This esteemed award recognizes employees who have made an exceptional and lasting impact on patients or their families. Coria was nominated by Sue Deyke, director of the emergency room, following a critical incident involving a patient experiencing cardiac arrest.

During this challenging situation, Coria went above and beyond his role as a medical interpreter, Deyke said. He not only effectively communicated vital information between the medical team and the patient's Hispanic family, but also provided unwavering emotional support and guidance.

In her nomination, Deyke explained that Coria demonstrated genuine concern and empathy throughout the crisis, ensuring the family fully understood the patient's condition and offering comfort during their emotional distress. His proactive efforts to guide the family to a quiet area, and his continued support following the patient's passing, showed the highest standards of patient care and compassion.

“Esteban's actions during this critical event were truly remarkable,” said Sue Deyke. “His dedication to providing both medical interpretation and emotional support to the grieving family exemplifies the profound impact that compassion and human connection can have during times of crisis. He is a true asset to our team and a deserving recipient of this award.”

In addition to recognizing Coria, CCH would like to express its sincere gratitude to Dedre Schoenfelder, Cari Farnzen and Hailee Luckey for their dedication to the LIVESTRONG program. These three individuals conducted a 12-week free fitness class for cancer patients at the YMCA, providing invaluable support to individuals navigating their cancer journeys.

“They were understanding, patient and compassionate, and they ran a flexible program to assist cancer patients at every stage of their journey,” said the nominator. “Their efforts have had a significant positive impact on the physical and mental health of these individuals.”
