CHI Health Good Samaritan Opens New Hybrid Cardiovascular Operating Room
A new $2.6 million Hybrid Cardiovascular Operating Room at CHI Health Good Samaritan welcomed its first patient this May. As the only one of its kind from Lincoln to Denver, the suite combines the traditional diagnostic functions of a cardiac catheterization lab with surgical functions usually found only in an operating room (OR).
The new space was funded in part by a $2.4 million anonymous donation to the hospital’s Foundation.
The configuration and advanced capabilities of the hybrid suite allows physicians to effectively diagnose and quickly transition to minimally invasive interventions or open surgeries, all in the same space. The flexibility to perform multiple procedures at the same time contributes to safety by exposing patients to less anesthesia and less radiation used in imaging. Better image quality and fewer incisions with the use of stents also work to lower the risk of infections for patients.
“Our new Hybrid Cardiovascular Operating Room is equipped to provide our patients with the best long-term outcomes. Whether we are performing a minimally invasive procedure or an open one, we are able to better visualize the specific area of treatment minimizing the risk to our patients. We will be able to take care of the problem right away, in just one trip to the hospital,” says Dr. Franz Murphy, board certified vascular surgeon.
The 1,167-square-foot hybrid cath lab/OR, double the size of one of the hospital's three traditional cath labs, is suited to treat a range of conditions from complex coronary and structural heart disease to stroke to peripheral vascular disease. The space features:

The new Hybrid Cardiovascular Operating Room at Good Samaritan offers a variety of procedures including aortic aneurysm repairs, thoracic aortic aneurysm repairs, femoral endarterectomies, carotid endarterectomies, ballooning and stenting of all vessels excluding the brain and heart, and fistulograms. Plans to add more specialized procedures in the future including atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale closures, mitralclips, WATCHMAN procedures (left atrial appendage closure for A-fib), ablations, as well as fistula formations and amputations.
