Columbus Community Hospital's Beyond the Scrubs: A Day of Hands-On Healthcare Discovery
Students can learn about potential careers during Columbus Community Hospital’s Beyond the Scrubs: Exploring a Universe of Healthcare Careers camp. The free one‑day event takes place Wednesday, July 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Throughout the day, young people entering grades 6-8 will take part in hands‑on activities that highlight the wide range of roles within a hospital. They will see how different areas connect, how teams work together and how their own interests might align with future career paths.
“The camp provides students a unique opportunity to interact with both clinical and non‑clinical teams,” said Melinda Allen, the hospital’s employment and education coordinator. They can see how different roles work together to support patient care and the hospital’s success. This camp is particularly meaningful for students preparing to enter high school, because it helps connect their interests and strengths with future opportunities in healthcare.”
Alecia Neidig, MSN, RN, NPD‑BC, the hospital’s director of professional practice, said the camp helps students explore healthcare in a meaningful way.
“By engaging them at a young age,” she said, “we’re not only sparking curiosity, but we are also inspiring the next generation of professionals who will care for our communities.”
The students will spend time at the hospital exploring clinical and behind‑the‑scenes areas, then head to the Columbus Fieldhouse for activities that encourage teamwork and curiosity.
Participants will receive a light breakfast, lunch and snacks at no cost throughout the day. To keep everyone safe during activities, CCH is requiring that they wear closed‑toed athletic shoes. Each student will also receive a free camp T‑shirt with registration, which they will wear during the event. Space is limited, and registration is open through June 20.
