Altru’s New Hospital Is Now Open, Revolutionizing Community Healthcare

Altru is proud to announce that its highly anticipated new hospital, a  project designed to revolutionize the healthcare experience for the residents of our region, opened on Sunday, January 19, 2025. The state-of-the-art facility, under construction since June 2019 and paused during the pandemic, spans 552,000 square feet with seven above ground floors and combines cutting-edge technology, innovative design, and a patient-centered  approach to care.

“Our new hospital is more than just a building—it’s a signal of our commitment to providing the  highest quality care in an environment designed for healing, comfort, and innovation,” said  Todd Forkel, Altru CEO. “This facility provides our care givers with the tools and space to  continue making a difference for our patients.”

A Reimagined Healthcare Experience

The new hospital boasts a variety of enhancements and features aimed at improving patient  outcomes and satisfaction:

  • Advanced technologies for better care

  • Expanded emergency services

  • Streamlined ambulance access

Designed for Healing and Comfort

  • A calmer atmosphere with all private patient rooms, as well as private NICU rooms and  private pre- and post-operative rooms.

  • An abundance of windows throughout the space, giving access to natural light, and a  greater connection to the outdoors.

  • A dedicated spiritual center that offers solace for reflection and spiritual care. A Monumental Achievement

  • The hospital features 226 licensed beds, a 16-bed observation unit, 12 operating rooms,  and 4 catheterization labs, offering modern design elements for improved care  processes.

  • At its peak, construction employed 450 workers daily, providing opportunities to many  local businesses and residents.

  • The hospital is equipped with an integrated interventional radiology (IR) and computed  tomography (CT) machine, a sophisticated imaging suite, and advanced infection control  systems designed to convert entire wings into negative pressure environments.

  • The cost estimate for the new hospital and related facility renovations, including the new  Altru Behavioral Health Center, is $500 million.

What’s Next

Once the move to the new hospital is complete, the process of decommissioning and  demolishing the old hospital will begin. Upon completion, the patient/guest parking lot and  water retention pond will be built in its place.

In the coming years, Altru will continue transforming the campus into a “Hospital in a Park,”  further enhancing the serene, healing environment, while also ensuring sufficient parking and  access to the facility.

Serving the Region for Generations

Altru’s new hospital reflects a vision of continued excellence in healthcare that puts the  community first, embracing innovation and compassion. From its cutting-edge facilities to its  commitment to patient well-being, this new space represents a brighter future for healthcare in  the region.
