Sanford Interventional Cardiologist Earns Prestigious Recognition In Poland

Adam Stys, MD, interventional cardiologist at the Sanford Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, was recently inducted into the Copernican Academy by Andrzej Duda, President of the Republic of Poland.

The Copernican Academy is a new institution in Polish science, based on five pillars illustrating the areas of Nicolaus Copernicus’ achievements. The five pillars include astronomy, economics, law, medicine and theology and philosophy.

“I am beyond grateful to receive this recognition from my native country,” said Dr. Adam Stys. “My family and I have many memories growing up in Poland and to earn this recognition, alongside so many other incredible people, is an honor.”

The Academy is an international institution, consisting of half Polish and half foreign scientists from across the globe. The key tasks for the Academy include promoting international research and cooperation, awarding Copernican prizes, supervising and supporting activities of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, as well as coordinating the International Copernican Academy Ambassador program. As Copernicus questioned status quo in science in his times, Academy lives up to the ideal of promoting free, unbiased research and education.

The Academy consists of a maximum of 100 people appointed by President of the Republic of Poland at the request of the individual Chambers of the Academy. A given candidate must receive a written recommendation from at least two existing members and support within the Chamber as a whole.

Other inductees into the Copernican Academy include five Nobel Peace Prize winners, a cardinal from the Vatican and other world leaders in science and research.
