Lean Health Care Annual Report Shares Hospital-Wide Improvements

Columbus Community Hospital's Lean health care is a process improvement plan, leadership style and management system that encourages employees to eliminating waste so they can add value for patients. The 2022-23 annual report highlights the program's improvements and staff development.

Lean’s strategic plan for 2022-23 included the following:

  • CCH “True North” initiatives

    • Support CCH’s strategic initiatives.

    • Provide continuous improvement of larger value streams in coordinated workflow and technology application utilization.

  • Continuous improvement

    • Engage frontline staff in waste identification and removing barriers.

    • Support all levels of the organization in improvement.

    • Standardize problem-solving methods.

  • Development

    • Provide Lean training to frontline staff and supervisors.

    • Offer training and technical assistance.

    • Report improvement findings and project statistics.

Lean’s ultimate goal is to establish a culture in which all of an organization’s employees are constantly looking for ways to reduce waste, streamline processes and improve patient care. When implemented correctly, Lean works by creating a culture of improvement and problem-solving at all levels of the organization. It encourages all employees to look at how they are performing their work to see if there are ways to make it more efficient.
