HHS Launches State Health Improvement Plan Supporting Its Strategic Business Plan And Vision Of Becoming The Healthiest State

North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) today announced the release of the 2024-2029 State Health Improvement Plan, which was designed through extensive data evaluation and collaboration with a wide range of partners throughout the state.

The plan sets forth a vision for enhancing the health and well-being of North Dakotans by identifying health priorities that will inform the development of associated goals, objectives and activities. The health improvement plan is part of the HHS strategic business plan, which will debut this summer, to achieve HHS’ vision: North Dakota is the healthiest state in the nation.

The State Health Improvement Plan is being shared in advance as a framework for community coalitions to use as they identify related goals and activities. Coalitions and partners will have the opportunity to apply for related grant funding and support.

The State Health Improvement Plan’s focus includes strengthening North Dakota’s health care workforce to ensure the state can meet the needs of North Dakotans and expanding access to essential health services - especially primary care, cardiac care, oral health, cancer screening and services to help prevent and manage chronic disease. Other focus areas include connecting North Dakotans to services and programs supporting economic, behavioral and physical well-being, along with cultivating a culture of wellness and building community resilience.

“I’m grateful to the team in our Public Health Division and to stakeholders across the state who participated in the comprehensive state health assessment process and contributed to this State Health Improvement Plan,” said HHS Commissioner Wayne Salter. “It supports the department’s forthcoming strategic business plan and reinforces a key priority to advance strong, stable, healthy families and communities in North Dakota.”

North Dakota State Health Officer Dr. Nizar Wehbi also thanked the diverse stakeholders who provided valuable information and feedback during the development of the State Health Improvement Plan. “This plan lays out a shared vision and way forward where our state stands as a beacon of health and well-being. By uniting our efforts, we commit to transforming this vision into reality, setting a benchmark for health improvement that is not only ambitious but also achievable. Together, we will strengthen the foundations of health that will support and enrich the lives of North Dakotans.”
