MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center is excited to unveil its newest addition to patient care: the MercyOne Siouxland Geriatric Behavioral Health Care unit.

While adult behavioral services have long been offered at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center, an inpatient geriatric behavioral health care unit has been previously unavailable in the Siouxland area and is the only inpatient geropsychiatric unit in Western Iowa.

“The newly opened geriatric behavioral health care unit means our community can better serve both the physical and mental needs of older adults in our area without the need to travel,” said Brittany Poss, MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center community education coordinator. “Many times, when people come to a behavioral health inpatient unit, they are at a difficult point in their lives. By creating a safe, home-like environment, we get to show these patients that they are just as important as any other patient we are treating in the hospital.”

MercyOne Siouxland Geriatric Behavioral Health Care will provide comprehensive, personalized treatment for senior adults with behavioral health illnesses such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression and dementia.

“The Midwest is very limited in services for any type of behavioral health. It’s a very underserved population,” said Jewel Sheley, BSN, RN, MercyOne behavioral health unit nurse manger. “There is this mentality in the Midwest that you deal with it and move on. But now it’s coming to the forefront, especially nationwide, and people are realizing it’s OK to get help.”

Admission will be offered to patients who are 65 years old and older who require active treatment of a psychiatric disorder. Patients referred to the geropsychiatric unit who are under the age of 65 years old will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center also opened its newly-renovated adult behavioral unit in September. It features a psych-safe environment including a door within a door, known as a wicket door, therapy rooms and a partial enclosure of the nursing station.

With these renovations, MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center will be able to house 16 geropsychiatric patients and an additional 11 adult patients.
