Sanford Health is the first in its region to add the most advanced diagnostic technology to diagnose lung cancer and lung diseases at an earlier stage.  Sanford USD Medical Center began using the Monarch Platform robot assisted navigational bronchoscopy in September 2020, with a high degree of success.

The Monarch Platform, developed by Auris Health, Inc., and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, allows Sanford Health pulmonary providers to use robotic control to reach areas of lung disease with precision to accurately diagnose lung cancer in its earliest stages to help provide patients with enhanced quality of life and improved life expectancy. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related death, primarily due to the late stage of diagnosis.

“We have had fantastic diagnostic success in our first months of use with the Monarch Platform, and anticipate improved outcomes for our patients,” said Paul Berger III, D.O., a specialist in advanced lung diagnostics for Sanford Health. “The Monarch Platform has allowed for the discovery of lung cancer from patients who would have otherwise not known, had a delay in diagnosis, or were more advanced in cancer stage.”

The Monarch Platform is primarily focused on lung cancer; however, is capable in assisting with the diagnosis of a wide array of lung diseases for improved treatment outcomes.  The developers of the Monarch Platform technology are continuing to develop the ability to provide focused treatments at the time of cancer diagnosis, further enhancing patient care.
