Darlene Cooper, Registered Nurse with the Ortho-Neuro-Surgical Unit at Rapid City Hospital, has been recognized with the prestigious DAISY Award. A national program, the award is presented to nurses across the United States who go above and beyond for their patients and community. Darlene was nominated by two former patients who commented on the compassion she exhibited as their nurse.

“She held my hand while I cried, encouraged me, and was a constant source of positive energy,” one patient said. “She worked with the night nurse to create a plan that ensured medical needs were met with the fewest interruptions.” The other person said Darlene went out of her way to ensure the patient was comfortable. “She took the time to sit and visit with me when I knew she was probably busy and had other patients. She listened to all of my stories of when I was a nurse.”

The DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses recognizes those who display dedication to the health and wellness of their patients. The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in California in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of an autoimmune disease. DAISY is an acronym for “diseases attacking the immune system.” The DAISY Award continues to recognize and celebrate the outstanding professionalism and compassion that nurses bring to patients and their families every day.
