MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center now provides lung cancer screening via its innovative 128-slice CT scanning system. This new low dose screening ensures early detection with annual preventative health checks, catching lung cancer in the early stages.
This technology is new to Siouxland hospitals and is the only method recommended for lung cancer screening in high risk patients. The system uses 75 percent less radiation than a regular CT scan and doesn't require needle sticks.
The results are producing clearer images, faster and more accurate diagnosis and treatment.
Recent studies have shown that utilizing this technology can decrease the risk for cancer by up to 20 percent and that for every 320 scans with the low dose system, one lung cancer death is prevented.
Patients that are current smokers or that were heavy smokers, but have quit smoking within the last 15 years, are eligible candidates for the scan.
