The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System has again been recognized as a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization.
The Health Care System received top marks for its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who can face significant challenges in securing adequate health care.
The Sioux Falls VA is the only health care facility in South Dakota to be named a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality. Facilities awarded this title meet key criteria for equitable care, including nondiscrimination policies for LGBT patients and employees, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for key staff members.
Darwin Goodspeed, Director of the health care system, noted, “It’s our mission to treat all Veterans with maximum respect in our daily interactions and to provide them the highest quality health care in a timely manner. Our facility has achieved leader status because of our staff’s work to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.”
The Healthcare Equality Index offers healthcare facilities unique and powerful resources to help provide equal care to a long-overlooked group of patients, as well as assistance in complying with new regulatory requirements and access to high-quality staff training.
