The South Dakota Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has awarded a grant to the John T. Vucurevich Regional Cancer Care Institute (CCI) to assist medically underserved women in western South Dakota with challenges during breast cancer treatment. Funds totaling $22,650 are available April 30, 2014, through May 1, 2015.

The grant will support the “Healing Pathways” program, an initiative assisting the medically underserved breast cancer patients of western South Dakota. This program will help remove the barriers of isolation by providing travel assistance while patients are receiving treatment for breast cancer. The “Healing Pathways” program will also help provide educational and survivorship programs in our community. These programs will likely have a very positive impact on breast cancer patients in western South Dakota specifically; they will make getting treatment and screening more accessible for rural populations.

The grant will be administered through the CCI Breast Health Patient Navigation Program. The Breast Health Patient Navigator will help coordinate the scheduling of appointments, educate patients about their diagnosis and treatment, and inform patients and family members about helpful services, resources and post-treatment support.
