29th annual Great Black Hills Duck Race

Nearly 16,000 rubber ducks will be dropped into Rapid Creek by front end loader and will race 1.5 miles to the Memorial Park finish line.

Activities begin at 1 p.m. at Memorial Park, with family-focused games, souvenirs, music, rides and more. The Drop of the Flock will take place at 2 p.m. near the West Main McDonald’s. More than $24,000 in prizes will be awarded to sponsors of the first 29 ducks to finish the race. The first-place duck will win a guaranteed $5,000 from Rapid City-area McDonald’s restaurants. That duck will also have a chance of winning its owner $1 million, a prize sponsored by Med5 Federal Credit Union. Of the thousands of ducks in the race, five have been preselected as Million Dollar Ducks. If the first-place duck is one of those, its sponsor will win $1 million.

The cost to sponsor a duck in the race is $5. Ducks can be sponsored for the race until 1:45 p.m. on race day at the West Main Street McDonald’s. Those who sponsor five ducks for $25 will receive a free duck race T-shirt. Ducks can be purchased from Duck Race teams across the community; at the Regional Health Foundation office at 2925 Regional Way; or online at the Regional Health website at

Registration forms also are located throughout the community at area businesses. Keep an eye out for Quacky the Duck during July at different locations around Rapid City.
