Dr. Brad Kamstra Named Program Director Of The Center For Family Medicine

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Brad Kamstra has been named Program Director of Center for Family Medicine. As the top executive of The Center for Family Medicine, the Director serves as the CEO and Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for the organization.

“After a national search and highly qualified candidate pool, the final selection of Dr. Kamstra was made with input from a group of faculty, residents, and administrative leaders by the Center for Family Medicine Board of Directors,” said Mark Vortherms Board Chair. “Dr. Kamstra’s familiarity with the program having been a faculty member the past seven years, along with his passion for Graduate Medical Education, Physician/Staff well-being, compassionate, patient-centered care for the entire family and love of the specialty of Family Medicine make him well suited to lead the organization into the future.”

Dr. Kamstra is a graduate of Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. His areas of special interest include Osteopathic Manipulative Techniques (OMT), sports medicine, rural health, and physician burnout. Dr. Kamstra’s medical interests include treating physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, including training future doctors to do the same. He loves being able to participate in all of aspects of patients care from babies to end of life.

He is passionate for Family Medicine and Graduate Medical Education. “I am excited to be a part of providing the best and most up to date training for our residents so that they can provide the best care for their patients. We will be celebrating 50 years of training at The Center for Family Medicine this year, this is a great heritage of preparing family physicians to practice in many of our surrounding communities – large and small. The faculty, administration, nurses, and other supporting staff are a big part of this training. I am looking forward to working together as we venture into the next 50 years.” said Dr. Kamstra.

He and his wife Cindy have been married for 31 years. Together, they are the proud parents of 5 children – Justin, Jennifer (and Chris) Baccam, Brandon, Braelynn, and Aaron. Dr. Kamstra is committed to his faith, family, patients, residents, faculty and Family Medicine.

In his free time Dr. Kamstra enjoys spending time with his family, camping, and traveling on international trips for medical and humanitarian reasons. He also enjoys listening to Christian music, 80’s rock, hiking, skiing and DIY projects.

Dr. Mark Huntington, who has served as Program Director and DIO of Center for Family Medicine these past 9 years, having spent a total of 17 years at Center for Family Medicine, will help to transition Dr. Kamstra into his new role beginning July 1st . Dr. Huntington will transition into a faculty role at Center for Family Medicine. “We are thankful to Dr. Huntington for his leadership and dedication these past nine years and look forward to his continued involvement and investment in the success of the organization.”

The Center for Family Medicine is devoted to providing compassionate, patient-centered care for the entire family in an educational setting. We are committed to improving the health of our patients, their families, and our communities; all while preparing the next generation of family physicians. Center for Family Medicine serves as the sponsoring institution for the Sioux Falls Family Medicine Residency program and the Pierre Rural Family Medicine Residency program. The family medicine residency programs have trained over 350 family physicians (practicing in the mostly Midwest) over the past 50 years.
