Dr. Joe and Sheila Liewer are set to chair the Mercy Medical Center Foundation Fall Gala on November 3, 2018 at the Delta by Marriott, formerly the Marina Inn.  Proceeds from this year’s event, “Mission Possible,” will support the New Hybrid Operating Room.

This annual fundraising gala, always an elegant and entertaining evening, enjoys tremendous local support and helps provide the financial resources needed to further Mercy’s mission of hope and caring.  Since its inception, the Gala has raised over $3 million to improve healthcare for Siouxlanders. Last year’s event sold out for the fifteenth year in a row.

Sheila Liewer was born and raised in Milford, Iowa.  She attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, earning a bachelor's degree in natural sciences.  Subsequent to graduation and while Joe was attending medical school, she worked in research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Dr. Joe Liewer is originally from Osmond, Nebraska.  Joe attended Briar Cliff College where he met Sheila.  He studied sciences and graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry.  After Briar Cliff, Joe attended medical school at the University of Nebraska graduating in 1992.  Joe and Sheila made their home in Kansas City, Missouri from 1992-1995 while he completed his emergency medicine residency at Truman Medical Center with the University of Missouri – Kansas City.

After residency, Joe and Sheila moved back to Sioux City to begin work at Marian Health Center, now Mercy Medical Center, to be closer to their families.  Joe has worked in the Emergency department at Mercy and with his group, Northwest Iowa Emergency Physicians, his entire career since joining the community in 1995.

"As an emergency physician practicing on the front lines of medicine in the community and at Mercy, I see the value of the new hybrid operating room.  Adding these resources to the community increases our ability to care for patients within Siouxland and the region," said Dr. Liewer. "Sheila and I are very excited to assist in this project that will ultimately make an important difference in patients' lives."
