Mercy Medical Center is teaming up with the Siouxland Stroke Support Network and the Sioux City Explorers for a Strike Out Stroke event on Wednesday, May 30, when the Explorers face the Kansas City T-Bones at 7pm. The Strike Out Stroke event will focus on raising awareness of stroke as an emergency along with signs, symptoms and risk factors.
Mercy and the Siouxland Stroke Support Network are working together to educate the community on the importance of recognizing stroke and prevention by choosing healthy lifestyles. It is estimated that 80% of strokes are preventable by controlling risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking. Stroke is the 5th leading cause of death in the United States. Knowing the signs and symptoms of a stroke is the key to better outcomes and quick life-saving treatment.
“We are excited to team up with the Sioux City Explorers in helping bring awareness of this disabling disease which impacts so many in our community. Bringing awareness of stroke signs and prevention is the goal of Mercy and the Siouxland Stroke Support Network, the only support group of its kind in the Siouxland community," said Nicole Shea, Mercy Stroke Program Manager.
Stroke survivors and area 5th grade students who recently received Mercy stroke education in their schools will also be enjoying the game and festivities.
Pre-game activities will begin at 5:30pm including fun family activities, games for all ages, stroke information, and nutrition information.
The Sioux City Explorers are offering tickets for $5.00 and hotdogs for $1.00 that evening. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.xsbaseball.com/tickets/individual-tickets/, at the Explorers box office or by calling (712)277-9467.
