Gary Timmerman, MD, Elected to American College of Surgeons’ Board of Regents

Gary Timmerman, M.D., professor and chair of the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine Department of Surgery, has been elected to serve on the Board of Regents for the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

 Dr. Timmerman joins 23 other regents elected to direct the Chicago-based American College of Surgeons, considered one of the world’s most important medical organizations.  ACS, founded in 1913, has more than 80,000 members from across the United States and around the globe.

 Dr. Timmerman is also a surgeon at Sanford Surgical Associates in Sioux Falls. The Watertown, S.D. native attended the University of South Dakota School of Medicine before graduating from Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO.

 Dr. Timmerman has extensive leadership experience with ACS, including as President of the South Dakota Chapter, and a variety of other regional and national positions during the past 20 years. During 2013 -2014 he was Chair of the national ACS Board of Governors.

 Dr. Timmerman is just the second South Dakota physician to serve on the ACS Board of Regents. Yankton, S.D. - based Dr. Chester McVay, another surgeon who was affiliated with the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine, served from 1974 to 1983.
