Rapid City Regional Hospital's (RCRH) Hospice of the Hills recently received a two-star achievement from We Honor Veterans following completion of its 20-month program. We Honor Veterans is part of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and works in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The two-star achievement is also known as a level two rating, and Hospice of the Hills is now one of 273 level two partners nationwide, and one of only two level two partners in South Dakota.
The We Honor Veterans program included integration of a Military History Checklist into the electronic medical record, community and team education programs, a Veteran’s Day World War II honoring event, and individual Hospice family honoring ceremonies. The program helps Hospice health care providers recognize the unique needs of America’s veterans and their families in partnership with the VA staff and teaches them how to accompany and guide them toward a more peaceful ending.
Currently 26 percent of the patients in the RCRH Hospice of the Hills program are veterans and 33 percent of the Home Care patients are veterans. Approximately 25 percent of all deaths in the United States each year are veterans.
